Harp Barbecue in Raytown, Missouri

Owner Tyler Harp and yours truly
Tyler Harp of Harp Barbecue didn't start his operation in Raytown until I was already done with my barbecue quest, but I was urged by a couple of people to try it out so I visited on June 22nd.  I didn't write a blog post about it until now, so I apologize for not posting sooner.

Tyler has partnered with Crane Brewing in Raytown to provide barbecue on Saturdays starting at 11:00.  They serve until they are out of food and word is getting around, so be sure to get there early.  There is always a long line.

Tyler serves a Texas style brisket, which is a little different and unique here in Kansas City.  It is a thicker cut than you get at most barbecue places here in town, which I love.  I went with a buddy of mine and we each ordered a brisket sandwich and split a rack of ribs.  We got some cheesy corn on the side.  See the picture below!

Everything was great.  I'll have to say that I'd definitely rank the brisket in the top five I've tried.  The ribs were great as well.  It's also great being in a micro brew, so you can sample a bunch of beers with your barbecue!

I took a picture of the menu, but I think it changes week to week.  I would recommend following them on Facebook to see what they're planning to cook each Saturday.  I think the main courses stay the same but he cooks up some special stuff as well.  One Saturday recently they served beef ribs, for instance.

The serving line at Harp Barbecue
Crane Brewing is located at 6515 Railroad St, Raytown, MO 64133.  It's kind of hidden in a small industrial area, but you should be able to find it fine if you put it in your GPS.

Check out Harp Barbecue when you get a chance!  You won't be disappointed!

First Place - Tin Kitchen in Weston, Missouri

First place on my list of best barbecue places in town is Tin Kitchen in Weston, Missouri.  My initial visit happened on Thursday, February 22nd, 2018.  You can read the blog post of my visit here.

When I reread my blog post about my visit, I made note that it was the perfectly cooked brisket but that the sandwich was not quite warm enough.  When I revisited last week and had the same thing  I thought the brisket was prepared and served perfectly.  Definitely the best brisket I had on my quest.  It really is too bad I live so far from this place.  If I lived down the road I might be tempted to eat there every meal!  On my revisit I tried the ribs as well and they were great.  I went with a buddy of mine and we got there around 4:00 on a Monday and the place was packed.  I was stunned at how busy it was at 4:00 on a Monday.  Even though they were busy the service and food was all fantastic.  It's definitely a destination spot for anyone in and around Weston.  We'll schedule an event here as well, so stay tuned for details!

2nd Place - Scott's Kitchen in Kansas City, Missouri

2nd place on my list of best barbecue places in town is Scott's Kitchen in Kansas City, Missouri near KCI.  My initial visit was on Friday, September 8th, 2017.  You can read the blog post of my visit here.

Scott's brisket.  Yum!
If you've been following the blog awhile, you'll recall that Scott's Kitchen was not on my initial list of restaurants to visit because he had just opened around the time I started the quest.  Scott found out about the quest and reached out to me and invited me to visit.  I was completely blown away by the quality of this new barbecue place that used to be a rental car place near the airport.

Scott's ribs.  They're great as well!
Scott started out as one of those competition barbecue guys and was pretty successful and finally decided to start a restaurant and catering business.  He's been very successful building his business, mostly by word of mouth.  We'll set up an event here as well so everyone can go try his barbecue.  Stay tuned for the details!

The owner of Scott's Kitchen, Scott Umscheid, and yours truly
Since my initial visit at Scott's I had his brisket at or near the top of the list.  This was long before his recently publicity of being one of the best restaurants in the city according to votes on Yelp.  I feel somewhat vindicated now that I can finally announce this publicly!  I feel like I was one of the first people in the city to discover this great new barbecue place!

4th Place - Mad Man's BBQ in Lenexa, KS

4th place on my list of best barbecue places in Kansas City is Mad Man's BBQ in Lenexa, KS.  My initial visit was on Friday, May 4th, 2018.  You can read the blog post of my visit here.

I've been to Mad Man's twice since my initial visit.  I went with some friends for my revisit and we had it planned out in advance, but it happened to be on the day of one of the snow/ice storms we had recently.  A lot of businesses closed down that day but they stayed open.  The brisket that day tasted stale like it had been sitting all day and warmed up when we ordered it.  I chalked it up to the ice storm and I decided to revisit one more time to make sure I wasn't going crazy because I enjoyed the brisket so much the first time.  The third time was an excellent sandwich again and much closer to what I remembered on my first visit.

Mad Man's has a trophy on their counter for winning best brisket food truck sandwich in 2018.  They really do serve a great sandwich, sans an ice storm!

5th Place - Johnny's BBQ in Olathe, KS

5th place on my list of best barbecue places in town is Johnny's in Olathe, KS.  I visited on Monday, June 26th, 2017.  I also visited the Johnny's location in Mission and I liked the Olathe restaurant better.

Johnny's has been around a long time and quite a few people have told me it's their favorite barbecue joint.  It's definitely good stuff.  I visited pretty early in my quest and they were always near the top of the rankings.  I would oftentimes compare places I visited to Johnny's.  As you can tell, there are only four that I found that have better brisket.

Not only do they have great barbecue, but great beer as well.  I hear the burgers are awesome, so I'll have to try that the next time I visit.  Like I said in my blog post, I went with a group of friends and everyone ordered something different and everyone raved about how good it was.  Hope you all give them a try if you haven't already.

8th Place - Jones Bar-B-Q

Finishing in 8th place on my list of best barbecue places in town is Jones Bar-B-Q.  I visited on Saturday, January 5th, 2019.  You can read the blog post of my visit here.

Hopefully you've heard the story of the Jones sisters by now.  The bottom line is they know how to make great barbecue!  The only negative thing I've ever heard about this place is that the line is too long.  Of course there's a reason for that!  It's a very popular place!  My recommendation is to get there early and arrive on an empty stomach so you can fit as much barbecue in your stomach as possible!  Also, bring some extra cash and buy a bottle of their sauce.  It's good stuff!

They don't have a website.  If you want to get an idea of the menu, google them and you'll see a couple of pictures of the menu posted.  Ignore the prices, as I think they may be a bit outdated.

Finishing in 10th place on my list of best barbecue places in town is McGonigle's Market in Kansas City, Missouri.  I visited on Friday, September 29th, 2018.  You can read the blog post of my visit here.

If you had told me before I started the quest that McGonigle's would make the top 10 I would probably call you crazy.  In fact, they weren't even on my initial list!  Part of the way through my quest I heard that they did barbecue from a few friends who said I needed to add it to my list so I did.  I chalk up the meat being so good to a couple of things...One, I bet they use the highest quality meat to smoke on their smoker and two, I got the meat directly off of the smoker, meaning it was hot, tender and very flavorful.  It was like eating something right off the grill.  It's always better.  I've heard the burnt ends are amazing as well so I'll have to go try them sometime.

20th Place - Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que In Kansas City, Kansas

Number 20 on the list of best barbecue places in town is the famous Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que.  I visited on Friday, September 15th, 2017 and you can view the blog post of my visit here

This one might raise a few eyebrows with people asking why they're not ranked higher.  In fact, I have a buddy that swears that they have the best brisket in town.  I just happen to disagree and encourage him to visit the rest of the barbecue restaurants on my list.

There's no question that Joe's has great barbecue.  They've been a huge success since starting out and that wouldn't have happened if they didn't have great food.  One reason I decided to do the quest was to not just trust what others told me was the best barbecue in town, but to figure it out on my own by visiting every barbecue place.

Finishing the quest

Here's my first blog post when I started the quest in June of 2017. Initially I wanted to do all the visits in a year and it ended up taking about a year and a half to get it all done. Interesting that I started with 69 on the list and ended up with 70. A lot were added along the way and a lot closed along the way. Just a reminder, I did not include national barbecue chains on my list and for local chains I only visited one location. So I didn't go to all of the Gates locations, just one of them.

I am going to announce the top 21 barbecue places on my list. Number 19, 20 and 21 had pretty close to the same score, so I decided to announce through number 21.

Please keep in mind, that while I may have tried multiple selections at some restaurants, I tried brisket at every one. I also had fries at every one that offered fries. As an amateur barbecue chef and smoker, I know that brisket is one of the most difficult cuts of meat to master. That's why I chose brisket.

I realize my taste may be different than someone else's taste and I realize I may get some push back on my choices. It's ok. I have thick skin. That being said, let's try to keep all the feedback positive. I was originally going to announce the top 10, but there ended up being 20 in my top 10, so I decided to do 20 and then decided on 21.

In judging the brisket, it had to be warm, juicy and tender with a smoke flavor to the meat. A tasty rub is a plus and I love a crunchy bark. Neatly trimmed of fat is also a plus. I'm not a fan of chewy meat and I had quite a few chewy pieces of brisket during the quest. Remember, I'm just judging the meat even though I did talk about the fries, sauces and ambiance of each restaurant in my blog.

I've been a "meat and potatoes" guy since I was a kid. I like almost every kind of meat if cooked properly. Am I a perfect judge? No, far from it. But I like to think I know what I'm talking about when searching for great barbecue.

I'm going to announce the top 21, one a day, around 5:00 every day starting tomorrow. When we get to the top four, we'll set up a day and time at each of those restaurants for a visit so we can all enjoy the barbecue together. That's what it's all about!

So stay tuned tomorrow as number 21 will be announced around 5:00. Thanks again for your support and encouragement and remember....let's keep it positive!

Vig's KC BBQ in Odessa, Missouri

Vig's brisket sandwich
My final stop on the barbecue quest took me to Odessa, Missouri and Vig's KC Bar-B-Q.  Odessa was a bit too far out off town to initially make the list of Kansas City barbecue restaurants, but I had a couple followers and readers insist that I add it to my list so I did.  I'm very glad I did.

Vig's is run by Gerald "Vig" Vigliaturo.  Upon retirement from Black and Veatch, Vig's daughter got him some business cards and a business license for his birthday to start a catering business.  The catering business evolved into a food truck and eventually grew into a restaurant location in downtown Odessa.

I arrived a little bit before 5:00 on Saturday.  I ordered a brisket sandwich combo, which comes with two sides and a drink for around 12 dollars.  The menu says "Piled high.  You should be full."  That's no joke.  As you can see in the photo above, the sandwich is humongous!

There was a family of four in the restaurant when I arrived and I was the only other person in there at this time.  Vig came out and greeted me and asked me where I was from.  When I told him Olathe, he asked what I was doing there!  I told him about my quest and he thought it was really neat that I am doing it.  He asked me to sign his "out of towners" guestbook that he has on the counter and I was happy to do that.

I ordered the baked beans and coleslaw as my side dishes and both were good.  The brisket was served thinly sliced on a bun and was a huge portion of meat.  The meat was very tender with a good hickory smoke flavor and smoke ring, but it was a bit cool temperature-wise for my taste.  There were three sauces that he offered, a spicy sauce, a mild sauce and a hot sauce.

The spicy sauce was sweet and spicy.  The mild sauce was good and the hot sauce was definitely hot, but very good as well.

When the family of four left, Vig came out and asked me if the music he was playing was ok, which was oldies music.  I told him that was fine, so he cranked up the radio a bit.  It was pretty funny.  Since there was nobody else in the place, he had a seat at my table and we talked a lot about his history, barbecue and business in general.  He was telling me about the menu and every time he mentioned something he asked if I liked it and when I said yes, he would say "ok, you have to try it" and he'd go back and get me a sample.  I sampled a lot of the menu while I was there.  He also makes sausages, soups and chili.  It was all great.  He brought out samples of the pulled pork and burnt ends.  The pulled pork was good, but the burnt ends were fantastic.  I commented how great they were and he nonchalantly said "Yeah, they're awesome, aren't they?"

Pulled pork and burnt ends
Vig just kept bringing out samples for me to try!
Vig is very proud of his food.  He gave me some of his chili and soup to take home and both were great.  I also got a free t-shirt out of the deal!  I promised him I'd wear it to give him some advertising.

Vig is a great guy who loves what he does and he loves great barbecue.  It was a pleasure talking to him and visiting his place.  The restaurant is only a block or two off of I-70 at the Odessa exit, so if you're traveling down I-70 it would be worth your time to stop in and try it.  He is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11-9.  He offers a sampler platter that includes samples of everything on the menu and it's around $35.  It's over four pounds of meat in total, so it'll feed a few people.  Definitely check it out!

This stop completes the quest!  So what comes next?  I'm going to visit the top three or four places on my list to get a fresh perspective and then I'm going to announce my top 20 list!  We will have events at the top three restaurants where everyone can go and enjoy their barbecue.  It will be a great time!

Thanks for reading and following along.  This has been a blast!

Follow along on Facebook for the revealing of the top 20.  Till next time...
